Major structural repairs One of the services J & J Sharpe provides is major structural repairs. This house in Crediton, Devon required an existing wall removing and rebuilding on new foundations. We discovered that there were not any foundations below ground level to a cob wall. There had also been a long term leak from mains drainage adjacent to this wall. The combination of these two factors resulted in the wall starting to move and become unstable. Working with structural engineers we strengthened and supported the roof load and sections of wall that were viable and removed the failing area of wall. This was then rebuilt to its original line from new foundations that were laid below ground level. The wall was finished with a hydraulic lime render on the outside and lime plaster internally.
Render removed on lower area exposing the lack of stone plinth, inappropriate previous repairs and failing cob.
Rotting timber lintel.
Support of wall on first floor.
Strengthening of roof structure prior to supporting from below while wall was removed.
Cob gable showing area of re build required from previous roof line (note blocked historic alcove).
