TIMBER FRAME PORCH RESTORATION

Restoration and repair of 16th century two storey porch, the upper storey being timber framed, on a house within Dartmoor National Park.

The timber supporting structure, roof timbers and the front wall of the upper storey of the porch was considerably weakened by beetle attack and rot. After carefully recording the original shape we removed the render, plaster, rotten laths and failed timber stud work.

Timbers & lath were rotten

New timbers fitted

The supporting timber beam and floor joists were strengthened by running lengths of stainless steel angle section alongside each of these. The roof structure was also strengthened with new supplementary timbers.

The front wall of the first floor was rebuilt to its previous line and tied back to the existing structure.

The 1960s metal casement window was replaced with a new oak mullion window. The inner and outer faces of this wall were lathed with oak laths which were then lime plastered and lime washed.

Plaster had failed and was falling away
